Australia Updates Infant Sleep Product Safety Standards

The Australian Government has approved the Consumer Goods (Infant Sleep Products) Amendment Safety Standard 2025, which updates the Consumer Goods (Infant Sleep Products) Safety Standard 2024. The amendments came into effect on 26 February 2025, enhancing the safety regulations for infant sleep products sold in Australia.

Mattress Firmness Requirements

The standard for mattress firmness (Section 17c) has been revised. The infant sleep product surface must comply with 16 CFR 1241 Safety Standard for Crib Mattresses.

Mattress Requirements for Different Sleep Products

  • If a mattress is supplied with a household cot, it must meet the requirements of paragraph 6.1(d) of AS/NZS 2172:2013, which covers safety requirements for household-use cots (Section 18d).
  • If a mattress is supplied with an infant sleep product that is not a household cot, it must fit snugly within the product with no gaps between the mattress and the sides to prevent entrapment hazards (Section 18e).

Small Part Cylinder Size Adjustment

The dimensions of the small part cylinder used for testing choking hazards have been modified. The updated specifications are:

  • 31.7mm wide opening at the top
  • Cavity depth of 25.4mm on the shorter side
  • Cavity depth of 57.1mm on the longer side

These changes align with international safety standards and aim to reduce the risk of choking hazards in infant products.
