Verify that your building products or systems meet designated fire resistance and flammability testing requirements such as ASTM E119 / UL 263 and ASTM E84 / UL 723, respectively
When it comes to fire resistance and flammability testing, you want confidence in a partner who has the expertise and experience to help you meet your local, state, or national building code requirements. As the building-products industry leader in testing, inspection, and certification, Intertek has the industry's most complete suite of fire and flammability testing services available.
Our full range of equipment includes Steiner tunnels at multiple locations, large-, mid-, and small-scale floor-furnaces (horizontal furnaces for testing horizontal assemblies such as floor-ceilings, roof-ceilings, fire-stop systems for through-penetrations in floor-ceilings, and for full engulfment of structural elements such as columns and beams, FRP gratings, safes, ventilation ducts and grease ducts) and wall-furnaces (vertical furnaces for testing of wall assemblies, expansion joint systems, and fire-stop systems for through-penetrations in walls), an Intermediate-Scale Multistory Apparatus (ISMA) for testing flammability of curtain walls and perimeter-joint systems, and hood-calorimetry and cone-calorimeters as well. Intertek can test building or construction products of virtually any size, and our testing facilities enable us to test the fire-resistance of products ranging from floor/ceiling, multistory assemblies to fire doors to firestops, as noted above.
We can conduct tests to ANSI/UL, ASTM, CAN/ULC, ISO, IMO Fire Test Protocols (FTP), NFPA, and a host of other test standards. Partnering with us gives you access to one of the most diverse portfolios of testing services in the world. Whether you require testing to industry requirements or association standards, custom testing for research and development, or certification for your product or system, we have the expertise you need.
Intertek offers the industry's most complete suite of fire and flammability testing. View our comprehensive fire brochure and learn more.
ASTM E84: Standard Test Method for Surface Burning Characteristics of Building Materials
ASTM E84 (often referred to as just “E84”) is the standard test method for assessing the surface burning characteristics of building products. The purpose of this test is to observe the flame spread along a sample to determine the flammability and relative burning behavior of it. Through the E84 test, both Flame Spread Index (FSI) and Smoke Developed Index (SDI) are reported for a given sample. FSI is the measurement for the speed at which flames progress across the interior surface of a building, while SDI measures the amount of smoke a sample emits as it burns. Learn more about ASTM E84.

Flame Spread
Measure the propagation of a flame away from the source of ignition across the surface of a material or assembly and evaluate the potential for spreading flames in the event of a fire.
Fire Resistance
Determine the ability of a material, product, or assembly to withstand a fire and provide protection on the non-fire side for a period of time (such as a 1-hour or 2-hour [fire-resistance] rated wall or floor-ceiling assembly).
Reaction to Fire
Understand the response when your product is exposed, under specified conditions, and how its material contributes to the flame through decomposition.
Fire Door Testing
With research, mid, and full-scale furnaces in each of our fire door testing labs, we can handle virtually any size door or frame in all regions of North America.
